MI Clean Air

A Simple Way to Make a Big Impact

For as little as $2 a month you can reduce your carbon footprint and preserve Michigan forests.

Easy Enrollment

MI Clean Air is an easy way to reduce your carbon footprint and fight climate change.

It can be difficult to reduce your carbon footprint to zero on your own. So we created the MI Clean Air Program to make it easier. When you take part in MI Clean Air, you pay as little as $2 a month to preserve forests in Michigan that offset the emissions of greenhouse gases.

Watch the video for a glimpse of the 3700 acre forest in Michigan's beautiful Luce County that is actively managed to absorb large amounts of carbon dioxide.

Why It Matters

Offset Greenhouse Gases in the Atmosphere

A carbon offset is when emissions from one carbon source, such as a home or business using natural gas, are compensated for by funding a carbon reduction project elsewhere. Forests work as a natural reservoir to store carbon. So we'll focus on preserving forests in Michigan.

A Small Step That Makes a Big Difference

Counteracting 50% of your natural gas emissions for a year avoids around 2.7 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions from being released into the air. That’s like driving 6,693 less miles, consuming 303 fewer gallons of gasoline, or recycling 1 ton of waste versus taking it to the landfill.

An Important Tool for Fighting Climate Change

Your subscription to MI Clean Air will help fund projects that actively remove greenhouse gases from the atmosphere. We prefer carbon offset projects located in Michigan. Our current forest preservation project is in Luce County, in the beautiful Upper Peninsula.

How It Works

  • For a small incremental cost on your monthly natural gas bill, you can offset a percentage (or all) of the greenhouse gases released when you use natural gas.
  • Depending on your budget and your goals, you can enroll to offset anywhere from 10 to 100% of the carbon produced by the average Michigan home.
  • Your subscription dollars pay for certified carbon-reducing projects, like preserving Michigan forests, counteracting your use of natural gas for everyday things like heating and water heating.
  • The program is open to all natural gas and combo customers, residential and business.

Certified to the Highest Standards

All carbon offsets purchased on your behalf meet the highest standards and are verified to meet the standards of one or more of the following entities:
