TAC Manufacturing Works with Consumers Energy to Make 100% Clean Energy Commitment at Jackson Plant

Business adds large solar array, joins Renewable Energy Program

TAC Manufacturing, one of Jackson County’s largest manufacturers and employers, today celebrated a complete clean energy commitment, powering its manufacturing plant with a new solar array and wind and solar energy that Consumers Energy will develop in Michigan.

“TAC Manufacturing should be recognized as a leader. It is making a promise to invest in our community and to protect the planet,” said Brian Rich, Consumers Energy’s senior vice president and chief customer officer. “These solar panels will provide clean energy to their Jackson facility, and Consumers Energy will do the rest to make sure TAC can be 100% sustainable.”

To that end, TAC and its Associates are proud to announce that we are taking a large step in that direction, by investing with local companies, in one of the largest private solar fields in Jackson County” said Scott Sturgis, TAC Manufacturing director. “We encourage and challenge other companies in the area to join us and support this type of activity.”

Officials from TAC Manufacturing and Consumers Energy today celebrated TAC’s clean energy commitment at an event at the manufacturer’s Jackson location. TAC will generate electricity from its solar panels. The rest of its energy use will be matched with renewable energy through Consumers Energy’s Renewable Energy Program.

TAC Manufacturing is a global automotive parts supplier, manufacturing automotive shifters, steering wheels and automotive components. The company has steadily grown over its 30 years in Jackson, employing over 800 people today.

TAC’s sustainability commitment starts with the solar array and its decision to join Consumers Energy’s Renewable Energy Program. TAC will reduce greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to what’s generated by over 2,250 gasoline-powered passenger vehicles driven for one year or the carbon sequestered from 11,000 acres of U.S. forests.

The company also has invested in technology on site that reduces energy use and agrees to use less energy at peak times if needed to help Michigan’s entire electric grid.

In total, over 30 businesses that Consumers Energy serves have committed to nearly 600 megawatts of emission-free renewable energy supporting their sustainability goals. This month, Consumers Energy announced that Walmart agreed to power 44 Michigan stores with clean energy.

Consumers Energy is Michigan’s largest energy provider, providing natural gas and/or electricity to 6.8 million of the state’s 10 million residents in all 68 Lower Peninsula counties. Consumers Energy’s Clean Energy Plan calls for eliminating coal as an energy source in 2025, achieving net-zero carbon emissions and meeting 90 percent of customers’ energy needs through clean sources, including wind and solar.
