Growing Our Local Economy and Resources

The Consumers Energy Foundation is dedicated to ensuring Michigan businesses and communities are growing and have world-class cultural resources. We’re deeply involved in community development efforts across the state. We award grants supporting our economic development priority to improve the welfare of whole communities, with a focus on funding projects with long-term benefits on Michigan’s economy.

Neighborhood Revitalization

We believe all Michigan residents deserve a safe, affordable community in which to live and work. That’s why we support nonprofits and municipalities that champion programs to transform communities into attractive neighborhoods, revitalize commercial corridors, encourage downtown development, reduce blight, and create safe and affordable housing.

Recent grant recipients include Habitat for Humanity of Michigan’s Neighborhood Revitalization Program, Metro Community Development to create housing opportunities in Flint, and Allen Neighborhood Center for the creation of Allen Place.

Job Growth

We are committed to creating jobs and supporting Michigan’s entrepreneurs and small businesses. That’s why we provide grants to economic development entities and other nonprofits aiming to create jobs and grow small businesses in Michigan.

Supporting Michigan’s entrepreneurs and small businesses is an investment in our communities and a commitment to creating jobs and viable businesses. Some of our more recent grant recipients include the Michigan Women Forward woman entrepreneurship initiative, Lean Rocket Labs business incubator and a $1.8M commitment to support small businesses in communities across Michigan during the pandemic.

Arts & Culture

We imagine a Michigan where every community is not only livable, but lovable. Places with attractive public assets and attractions that enrich the lives of residents. Arts and culture are integral to the vitality of the communities we serve, providing job and educational opportunities, attracting visitors and creating vibrant communities in Michigan.

We are proud to support nonprofits including the Jackson School of the Arts, the Capitol Theatre in Flint, Impression 5 Science Center in Lansing, and public radio stations across the state.
