Natural Gas Customer Choice

You Have The Option To Choose A Natural Gas Supplier


To confirm who supplies you with natural gas, check the "charges" section on your bill:
  • A "Gas Cost Recovery" charge means Consumers Energy provides your home or business with natural gas.
  • A "Supplier Charge" means an Alternative Gas Supplier provides your home or business with natural gas.
Note: Regardless of who supplies you with natural gas, Consumers Energy reads the meter, processes the bill, maintains and repairs gas lines and responds to emergencies.

The Benefits of Being a Consumers Energy Customer


  • We plan ahead and pass the savings on to you. To help make the most of your energy budget, we buy our natural gas in the summer when demand and pricing are low. Then, we store it until you need it.
  • We don’t sell at a profit. We only charge what we pay for natural gas.
  • Our natural gas prices are at the lowest they’ve been in a decade.

Switch Natural Gas Suppliers


If You Decide to Make the Switch
  • Visit the Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC) website for a list of suppliers and make a selection.
  • Contact the supplier to begin service.
  • You can switch from your current provider to another natural gas provider once during each 12-month period (from April to March) without being charged a fee. After that, if you choose another provider, you’ll be charged a $10 fee each time you switch.

NOTE: Consumers Energy is not associated or affiliated with Alternative Gas Suppliers, and we do not recommend or endorse any of their products. If you purchase your gas supply from an alternative gas supplier, the price will not be regulated by the MPSC.

If You Choose Another Supplier
  • We still deliver the supplier’s natural gas.
  • You continue to receive a bill from Consumers Energy that covers the delivery charges. The natural gas charge changes to “Supplier Charge”.
  • We still maintain and repair gas lines, and respond to emergencies.

Return to Consumers Energy


You are always welcome to return to Consumers Energy. Here is how to do it:

  • Contact your current supplier and let them know you want to return to Consumers Energy. Be sure to ask what the changeover process involves – it may require additional fees.
  • If you switch suppliers more than once during a six-month period, you will be charged a $10 switch fee.
  • After you return to Consumers Energy, your bill will include a line item called “Gas Cost Recovery.”
