Gratiot Farms Wind Project

Powering Michigan’s Clean Energy Future

Energy. Environment. Economy

Often, these priorities seem at odds with one another. Not so with the wind farm we own and operate in Gratiot County.

The $260 million Gratiot Farms Wind Project creates a new source of clean, renewable energy from the wind that blows across our state. This protects the environment while bolstering Michigan’s economy and creating jobs. Located in North Shade and New Haven Townships in Gratiot County, the project includes 60 wind turbines collectively capable of generating up to 150 megawatts of wind energy. Commercial operations are scheduled to start in late 2020.

At Consumers Energy, we’re pleased to continue the commitment we’ve made to this state for nearly 135 years. We appreciate your support for the Gratiot Farms Wind Project, which will help power the future for Gratiot County and Michigan.

Background

We own and operate the Gratiot Farms Wind Project. We acquired the project from Enel Green Power North America, one of the largest developers, owners and operators of renewable energy in the United States. Enel Green Power North America performed studies, secured permits, acquired real estate and carried out other functions needed to develop the project to the construction stage.

Economic Benefits

The Gratiot Farms Wind Project has created direct and indirect economic benefits to Gratiot County. Those benefits start with jobs: approximately 250 construction jobs while the energy park was built and 10 permanent jobs during operations. Those permanent employees will work from an operations and maintenance facility in Middleton that's scheduled for completion in early 2021.

The wind farm has increased the overall tax base, providing new revenue for local education and critical basic services at a time when the cash-strapped state government is reducing funding to local governments.

Protecting the Public and Environment

The Gratiot Farms Wind Project is designed to comply with, and in many cases exceed, the requirements of local wind zoning ordinances.

Numerous studies were conducted to show the project will not impact public health, safety or welfare and will have minimal environmental and local wildlife impacts.

Our Third Wind Farm

The Gratiot Farms Wind Project is our third wind farm in Michigan. We also own and operate the Lake Winds Energy Park near Ludington and the  Cross Winds Energy Park in the state’s Thumb region.

Combined, the three wind farms will help us meet Michigan’s 15 percent renewable energy target by 2021.
