The number of electric vehicles on Michigan roads continue to go up each year. That means the demand for EV charging for shoppers, travelers and residents is rising too.
To help communities offset the costs associated with installing chargers, we’re offering a rebate up to $7,500.

Be a Consumers Energy commercial electric or combo customer

Own or have permission to install a charger in a parking lot or curbside location

Install any UL Listed, ENERGY STAR® Certified Level 2 charger with at least two plugs, two (2) NEMA 14-50 outlets, or five (5) 120-volt outlets on 100 amps of service

Install chargers or outlets in a public parking lot or curbside locations, within one to three blocks of a multifamily property or residential neighborhood

Agree to separate meter and enroll on commercial time of use (TOU) electric rate
Frequently Asked Questions
Rebates are available for commercial electric/combo customers in the municipality sector (e.g., cities, townships, or other community entity).
Chargers or outlets must be made publicly available for all EV drivers. With network-connected Level 2 chargers you can set per kWh pricing to help recover investment costs. You can also establish a permit system to set a fee for non-networked charger or charging outlet use.
Participants must install a minimum of two (2) Level 2 charge ports, two (2) NEMA 14-50 outlets, or at least five (5) 20-amp 120-volt outlets or equivalent chargers on 100 amps of service to qualify for the full $7,500 rebate amount. The total rebate amount awarded may not exceed the total cost to buy and install the chargers or outlets.
Any chargers that are UL Listed and ENERGY STAR Certified qualify for participation in the Community Charging Center rebate program.
Level 2 chargers must not be more than 50 amps or 9.6kW of power per charge port.
There is no rebate cap per property, but rebate funding may be limited.
We require a separate meter enrolled on our commercial Time of Use electric rate plan (GSTU). This helps encourage off-peak charging when the cost of electricity and demand on the grid is at its lowest. Check out an overview of the GSTU Rate Plan to learn more.
Consumers Energy will cover the cost up to $10,000 to make sure there is enough power supply and a dedicated electric service meter onsite for the chargers or outlets installed.
We will provide signage for dedicated parking spaces per charge port installed once a project is completed. Signage is designed to encourage drivers to charge during off-peak hours and discourage vehicles that are not charging from parking in such spaces.
