Natural Gas Generation

  • The Covert Generating Station, a 1,176-megawatt natural gas plant, can power more than 1 million Michigan homes and will help ensure regional electric reliability.
  • The Jackson Generating Station uses natural gas to create electricity. The plant has a capacity of 540 megawatts, enough to power a community of about 450,000 people.
  • The Zeeland Generating Station has a capacity of 930 megawatts, enough to power a community of about 800,000 people. The site consists of one steam turbine and four combustion turbines, which use natural gas for a fuel source.
  • The Zeeland Generating Station is located on a 30-acre site in the city of Zeeland. The first phase of the plant was completed in 2001 and the second phase in 2002.

Natural Gas: It’s Not Just for Heating

Natural gas is an affordable and clean option for generating electricity, saving you money and helping the environment. We have two natural gas combined cycle plants in our fleet, one in Zeeland and one in Jackson, with a total generating capability of 1117MW.  The Zeeland facility also employs two natural gas simple cycle units providing an additional 360MW of generating capability.  Together, The Zeeland and Jackson Generating Stations are capable of contributing over 1,470 megawatts of clean energy to the grid.

In June 2023, we also began operating the recently purchased Covert Generating Station, a 1,176-megawatt, natural gas-fueled generating facility in Van Buren County. The Covert plant, which began operating in 2004, is a key part of our Clean Energy Plan to deliver reliable, affordable energy to Michigan for years to come.
