The Renewable Energy Program (the program) gives eligible residential electric and combo customers the opportunity to reduce their carbon footprint and support new renewable energy projects in Michigan, like wind and solar. This program is perfect for customers who want to make a positive impact on the environment without having to install or maintain equipment of their own.

Starting at just a few dollars a month, you can enroll to match some or all of your electric use with the renewable energy resources we build and manage. Your subscription dollars will support the development of new wind and solar projects in Michigan, and then you’ll earn bill credits each month from the renewable energy we generate and sell to help offset your participation cost.

Enrollment in the program requires an initial 12-month subscription. You may cancel at any time without penalty after the initial 12-month term.

Participants will select the percentage of renewable energy they would like to subscribe to and will be charged at an agreed upon fixed subscription fee per kilowatt hour. Your subscription fee will not change during the duration of your enrollment. Check out the enrollment calculator on the website to see the subscription cost and the impact your enrollment can make.

There will be a new section on your bill directly below your monthly electricity charges called Renewable Energy Program. This new section will show your subscription cost and details. Once the billing starts for your subscription, your monthly electric bill will be impacted in two ways:

1. First, you’ll see a charge for your renewable energy subscription fee.

2. Second, you’ll see the bill credits from the sale of the renewable energy generated and sold based on your subscription level. These credits will help offset your subscription cost.

Your subscription fee will remain fixed for the duration that you are enrolled in the program; however, the bill credit you receive will vary monthly due to fluctuations in the market value of renewable energy.

Today, the program is supplied with energy from our current wind and solar facilities located throughout Michigan. We’ll add new, additional renewable resources as needed as we continue to accelerate our clean energy initiatives. Below is a list of current resources supporting the program.

• 120 MW – Cross Winds® Energy Park, in Tuscola County
• 310 MW – Sunfish Solar, in Calhoun County
• 85 MW – Karn Solar, in Bay County
• 220 MW – Liberty Farms, in Kalamazoo County
• 117 MW – Caledonia Solar, in Kent County

Due to the complexity of the power grid, it’s not possible to route the solar and wind energy directly to your home. Your home will continue to receive electricity as usual. The renewable energy we generate flows into the grid where it is mixed with electricity from other conventional sources and brought to you, ensuring you always have the same reliable power. Your participation supports the development of new renewable energy resources without having to install or maintain clean energy equipment of your own.

If you move within Consumers Energy’s electric service territory, your enrollment in the program will move with you. If you move out of Consumers Energy’s electric service territory, your subscription will be canceled without penalty.

If you wish to cancel your subscription simply send an email to renewableprogram@consumersenergy.com from the email you used to sign up. Once we receive your email, we’ll confirm your cancellation.
